Metadata

Metadata helps search engines, browsers, and devices understand your app. The most important parts to set are the title, description, and favicons.

Title

The title defines the text in the browser tab and search results. For optimal results, follow those tips:

  • Keep it clear and under ~60 characters
  • Include the main keyword for the page

Description

The description gives search engines and social platforms a short summary of your app. For optimal results, follow those tips:

  • Aim for ~150–160 characters
  • Write it like a mini ad that encourages clicks

Favicons

Favicons are the small icons that appear in browser tabs, bookmarks, and mobile shortcuts.

Setting metadata

Title and description

If you want to set your app's title or description, tell Instance what you envision, and Instance will update your app accordingly.

Favicon

Since there are multiple browsers and users can install your app as a PWA, adding multiple icon sizes ensures they display correctly everywhere.

We've created a simple tool to help you generate all the necessary image sizes: https://favicon.instance.so. Just upload a PNG file to generate different favicons. For optimal results, use a 512 x 512px PNG.

Upload the generated PNG images to Instance with a prompt like the following to ensure the favicons are updated correctly:

Use these images for the favicon
Upload the icons and tell Instance what to do with them

Note: You can’t and don't need to upload the favicon.ico, site.webmanifest, or browserconfig.xml files to Instance. However, if you use the favicon generator for other websites, you might still want to use these files.

Other useful metadata

Beyond these three basics, you may also want to define:

  • Open graph / Twitter card tags for social media previews
  • Theme color for mobile browsers

These aren’t strictly required, but they improve how your app looks across devices and platforms.
